I just finished watching a very powerful documentary film on the OWN network titled Miss Representation. This film is written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
A synopsis from the site states, “the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.”
Some stats:
-the United States is 90th in the world for women in national legislatures
-women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media
- 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.
You will see:
-Condoleezza Rice
-Nancy Pelosi
-Katie Couric
-Rachel Maddow
-Margaret Cho
-Rosario Dawson
-Gloria Steinem
-and interviews with many teenage girls
Go to the site, view the trailer, and let me know what you think-

The statistics are shocking, we as women need to empower ourselves and be the instrument for change.
B.F. had it right. “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
Cheers ladies!

I agree – women are definitely mis represented still even though they have emerged and come a long way.
